'Bois-des-esprits' by Mike Grandmaison Winnipeg, Manitoba. Canada I created this image in an urban forest as part of a promotional campaign to save the largest remaining riverbank forest in the city of Winnipeg, Manitoba. Working with the local conservation group ‘Save Our Seine’ (SOS), we pressured various levels of government to preserve this important urban forest environment along the Seine River and thus prevented the local builders from bulldozing the land in order to build more housing. The image of'Les Bois-des-esprits' (Spirit Woods) was used as a postcard add campaign, in a large trade show display and as a fundraiser for the group’s 25th anniversary. Following a 4-year campaign, the group was finally successful in preserving 82 acres of forest to keep a much needed buffer between the river and the housing development. Today, the forest is a wonderful destination for urban folks to keep connected to the natural world. I later created an ‘Orton’ of this image, essentially a double exposure where one image is in focus and the second image is slightly off focus, creating a slight halo in the brightest areas.
