Artist Statement:
Born in Boulder, CO, raised in a variety of places, I developed a love for creating and an appreciation for landscape and beauty at an early age. Some of my earliest memories include visiting my grandparents home in Cape Cod where my grandmother had an art studio. We would wander the beaches looking for shells and sea glass and other treasures that I’d later watch her sketch back in her studio.
Whether I was smelling the salty sea air or the crisp mountain air, I quickly learned the impact the environment had on my creativity. As I grew as an artist I realized the opposite was true as well. I love the power and presence a painting can hold in a room, changing the space and energy in a profoundly beautiful way.
Heavily influenced and inspired by physical landscape combined with a love for bold color combinations and gestural brushstrokes, my work aims to capture a feeling of being in a particular moment rather than a literal depiction of a scene. Created using a palette knife and dry brush, I apply the paint directly to the canvas in an intuitive way resulting in paintings that walk the line between fully abstract and landscape abstract expressionism. I love how the dream-like abstract nature of my paintings allows each painting to remain open to interpretation, to have a unique impact on each person who is experiencing it.
Sarah earned numerous accolades for her artwork in high school and went on to earn a BFA in painting and photography at a private university in Indiana. She has been painting professionally since 2010. She currently paints in Nashville, TN where she also lives with her husband, two children and golden retriever.
