Artist Statement:
Each of my drawings are unique in the sense that they represent the two-dimensional plane, as precursors for my three dimensional sculptures. My drawings are a fluidic flow of lines with rhythm and continuity of shapes where the viewer cannot see any breaks or sudden changes or variations in the body movement and flow. This is one of the key reasons people can identify my work from the work of other artists.
My feeling is that core strength of a sculptor lies in his strong foundation of drawing. My drawings exude the simplicity in the form I am expressing without any details and yet giving the viewer a holistic picture of form, dimension and movement being created. I try and capture the simplified form of an object by removing the clutter, which helps create a unique look and feel in objects, human faces, animals, and human figures in my work.
It’s this style and art that has identified me with viewer who find pleasure in the simplified form. This makes everyone connect with the piece of art making it difficult to alienate simply because it’s too simplified. From a distance you will see the simplicity of the human figure, animal form etc that I make and yet when you come close you can see the unexpected realism that has been created.
The beauty of the female form is like that of the flower on the plant. The flower is beautiful only until it is on the plant and once you pluck it then it is no more holds the beauty you once could see. The same happens if a person looks at my work for its simplicity he will be able to see the beauty of the form but once their mind goes on to look for detailing then the beauty will disappear.
Because I am a sculptor I am able to create contour lines of the female figure and express the mass of the female figure hence making it simplified and yet keeping the three dimensional form of the sculpture alive.
I try and keep freshness in my mind by doing the strokes in clay or with pen only once each time and not going over and over again on the stroking once made. I never run on the same line again. I have a flow of lines in my drawing and sculptures, continuity, a rhythm and this is what makes my work unique and liked by all.
My work has been influenced by the French sculptor Auguste Rodin as I have had the opportunity to study under the guidance of my professor whose professor has studied under the tutelage of Rodin. This is what makes me and my work more connected to Rodin style.
